Skill · The Developed Advantage

What you learn to do exceptionally well.

Skill is everything a rep can be taught, practiced and observed. It's the most coachable dimension, and the one that most directly converts potential into sales.

Attributes

The skill toolkit.

What each attribute looks like at the door, and one way to build it.

Opening and transitions

Looks likeA clear, honest reason for being there, then a natural move into questions.

Build itWrite three openers; test each for a week and compare presentation rates.

Discovery and active listening

Looks likeOpen questions, then real listening.

Build itAim for the homeowner talking more than you during discovery.

Needs analysis

Looks likeTurning what you heard into one or two specific needs.

Build itSummarize back: “So the main thing is ___, right?”

Value-based presentation

Looks likePresenting what matters to this homeowner, with their numbers.

Build itCut every feature that doesn't connect to something they said.

Product and competitor knowledge

Looks likeAccurate, confident answers, including “I'll find out.”

Build itWeekly quiz on your own product and the two most common alternatives.

Objection handling and negotiation

Looks likeCalm, curious responses instead of rebuttals.

Build itDrill the six-step framework in the Objection Lab.

Closing and follow-up

Looks likeA clear ask, and a specific next step when it's not yet.

Build itEvery conversation ends with a decision or a date.

Territory and time management

Looks likeKnowing where and when to work for the best contact rates.

Build itTrack contact rate by time block and street for two weeks.

At the door

What a coach sees.

  • Asks purposeful questions before pitching
  • Identifies a real need, in the homeowner's words
  • Connects the offer to that specific need
  • Handles objections calmly and asks for a clear next step

Observable at the door.

Skill is the dimension a coach can see. Ride along and you'll know within a few doors whether the rep asks questions before pitching, whether the presentation connects to what the homeowner said, and whether there's a clear ask at the end.

That makes it the best place to coach, one behavior at a time, and to check the change in the numbers a week or two later.

In the numbers

Where it shows up.

Skill shows most in presentation rate (opener, discovery) and close rate (value, objections, the ask, follow-up).

Practice in the Objection Lab

Build all three.

Track your activity. Develop your skills. Use your strengths. Improve the weakest stage of your funnel.
